(photo courtesy of Georgia Farm Bureau) Monroe County Farm Bureau received three awards for its member programs during the Georgia Farm Bureau 5th District annual meeting, held Sept. 11 in Thomaston. Chuck Benson is the MCFB president. The MCFB Young Farmers & Ranchers Committee, chaired by Wesley Ham, re- ceived the 2018 5th District Outstanding Young Farmers & Ranchers Committee Award. The committee consists of fa'mers and ranchers between ages 18 and 35. The MCFB Legislative and Policy De- velopment committees, chaired by Butch Copelan and Chuck Benson, respectively, received the 5th District Outstanding Legislative Program Award. The committees combined to plan a farm tour for staffmembers from Senator Johnny Isakson and David Perdue's offices, along with state Rep. Robert Dickey, to emphasize the importance of Congress passing the farm bill. The tour made stops at three local farms and the attendees were given reference materials about conserva- tion programs used on those farms. MCFB Vice President Melissa Mathis received the 5th District Young Farmers & Ranchers Excellence in Agriculture Award. Mathis is president of Country Oaks Farm & Pet Supply in Bolingbroke, as well as part owner of Town-N-Country Farm & Pet Supply in Monticello. The GFB 5th District includes 17 coun- ties in west central Georgia. Founded in 1937, Georgia Farm Bureau is the state's largest general farm organiza- tion and has 158 county offices. Its volun- teer members actively participate in local, state and national activities that promote agriculture awareness to their non-farm- ing neighbors. GFB offers its members a wide variety of benefits, induding insur- ance, but enrollment in member benefits is optional and not a requirement for membership. Principal Chief James Floyd and members of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation from Okmulgee, Okla. toured the Indian Springs Hotel/Museum built by Chief William Mclntosh in 1823 on 0 Sept. 14. Members of Butts County Historical Society hosted the tour for Floyd, who is a direct descendant of McIn- tosh, and the group with him. HOPIGNS ~-~ ASSOCIATES 0 (Creek) Nation in the Inter-Tribal Council of five tribes established in 1949. McIntosh signed a trea- ty to cede Creek lands to the U.S. government at the Indian Springs Hotel and was later killed by members of the tribe angered by the treaty. Behind the group is a portrait of Chief William M lntosh preserve and enrich the displays on the Nation at the hotel. At the end of the tour, to the surprise of his hosts, Floyd read and presented BCHS Presi- dent Frankie Willis with a prodamation from the Nation commending .the Historical Society for preserving the Hotel and for educating the public about the Muscogee (Creek) Nation in the museum. Indian Springs Hotel/ Museum is located on Highway 42, across from the entrance to Indian Springs State Park. It is open for tours from May through October and at other times by request.
