October 2, 2019 Reporter Page 33 C-Team girls place second at Rock Ranch By Richard Dumas torsyth©mymcrnet The Mary Persons girls cross country team placed seventh out of 14 teams at the Rock Ranch Invitational in Yatesville on Thursday. MP totaled 193 points as Whitewater took the varsity girls team title with 47 points. Stratford Academy finished runner-up with 68 points while LaGrange came in third with 90 points. Jones County’s Laney Doster was the varsity girls individual champion with a time of 20 minutes, 6 seconds, beating second~place Ande Chaloult of Houston County by about 1 minute, 11 seconds. MP’s top girls individual time was recorded by sophomore Maradeth Leverett, who placed fourth overall out of 111 total runners with a time of 21 min- utes, 57 seconds. MP’s other counting times were recorded by: Sarah Boyer, who placed 26th with a time of 24 minutes, 16 seconds, Laura Martin, who placed 59th with a time of 26 minutes, 35 seconds, Stormie Martin, who placed 63rd with a time of 26 minutes, 52 seconds, and Genna Hallman, who placed 70th with a time of 27 minutes, 15 seconds. Other MP varsity girls run- ners who competed at Rock Ranch on Thursday but failed to record counting times in- cluded: Madelyn Causey, who placed 75th with a time of 28 minutes, 8 seconds, and Jackie Gore, who placed 82nd with a time of 29 minutes, 2 seconds. Other varsity girls teams in attendance at Rock Ranch on Thursday in order of highest to lowest finish included: Pike County, Veterans, Houston County, Upson-Lee, Harris County, Spalding, Warner Robins, Lamar County, Jackson and Howard. Two more MP girls runners competed as individuals in the JV girls race on Thursday. Emma Barksdale placed 17th overall out of 35 total runners with a time of 33 minutes, 43 seconds, while teammate Gwyneth Cabe placed 18th with a time of 33 minutes, 43 seconds. The MP girls varsity and JV cross country teams will next compete in the Alexander/ Asics Invitational in Doug- lasville at 8 am. on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Monroe County Middle School girls cross country team will next compete at home in the Middle Georgia Middle School Athletic League Championships at the Monroe County Recreation Department at 4:30 pm. on Thursday. Volley Dogs handle Howard in area match By Richard Dumas iorsyth©mymcrnet The Mary Persons varsity volleyball squad captured its first region victory of the season with a straight—sets home win over Howard on Sept. 19. The Volley Dogs, 3-15 overall (1-7 in Region 2-AAAA), took the first set 25-11 before winning the second set 25-21 to complete the win. MP then faced off with another region foe Spalding later in the evening, losing in straight sets 16-25, 21-25. Four straight service points by MP’s Taylor Miner tied the second set with the Lady Jags at 21—all, but Spalding came back with four straight points of its own to complete the win. Two days earlier, MP lost in straight sets in a non-region road match at Jackson on Tuesday, Sept. 17, dropping the first set 5-25 before falling 17-25 in the second set. MP will next play at West Laurens on Thursday, Oct. 3. The Volley Dogs will face Upson-Lee at 5 pm. before taking on Howard at 7 pm. Meanwhile, the MP JV volleyball team fell at home in three sets to West Laurens on Wednesday. The JV Volley Dogs took the opening set 25-21 before dropping the second set 20-25 to force a deciding third set. In an abbreviated deciding set, the Lady Dogs fell short 7-15. Also, the MP 9th Grade volleyball team wrapped up its 2019 campaign with a straight sets home victory over West Laurens on Wednesday.
