This year he is representing Vatdosta State University playing baritone as part of its Blazin' Brigade. Johnson reported to campus on Aug. 5 to begin practic- ing with the band before dasses started on Aug. 13. :7 "It's a fun experience here, but a lot different from Mary Persons," said Myles. "It's a high honor to represent the school:' Myles is a music educa- tion major. He had to audi- tion to be accepted into VSU's school of music and did so a few months before his high school graduation last May. "I was really confident, sure ofmysdf. I'd been dreaming of this moment since 8th grade," said John- son. "Some people said I couldn't do it. I'm blessed. It motivates me to keep on" He would like to direct a high school band some- day, but more than that he wants to teach young peo- ple to express themselves through music. As drum major he had the chance to develop leadership skills at Mary Persons and inspire his fellow band members, who worked together to earn overall superior rat- ings at all of their competi- tions.
