Monroe County deputy Michael Norris was mortally wounded on Sept. 13, 2014 while re-
sponding to a report of a man considering suicide off Pate Road. Norris was lust 24, and left
behind his young wife and grieving parents and brother. His fellow deputy Jeff Wilson was
shot but survived. The Reporter has since created the Michael NorrJs Memorial Scholarship
to encourage young people with good character from Monroe County, like NorrJs, to pursue
education and a career in law enforcement and public service. Over the past four years the
Norris Scholarship has been able to give away more than $10,000 in scholarships to worthy
Monroe County youngsters interested in law enforcement or other first responder type ca-
reer, all due to the generous donations and the support of this community. This page spread
is published every year on the anniversary of Norris' death to remind the community of his
sacrifice. Proceeds from these business ads go to help fund the scholarship. To make your tax-

chael Norris Scholarship from Reporter publisher Will Davis in 2019. The
scholarship is for Monroe County young men and women interested in a
career in public safety. The Reporter started the scholarship in memory of
Norris, who was killed in the line of duty in 2014. Mooney said it's an honor
to receive the scholarship since Norris was his hero as he was growing up.
Strong local support has allowed the scholarship to increase every year it
has been given. Tax deductible donations can be sent to PO Box 795, Forsyth,
GA 30129. Davis said they will likely be able to give an even bigger scholar-
ship next year thanks to the annual golf tournament and other fund raisers.
