PASTOR'S CORNER by Brian Moore ! ! ! ! + od created mankind to live in communi When he created as the only human being on the face of the earth, He said, "It is not good that man should be alone" God created us for companionship. One of Satan's greatest attacks against Christians is isolation. Satan knows that there is strength in numbers, but weakness in loneliness. That is why he attacks relationships, churches, marriages, and friendships. As Christians, we must value and preserve the rela- tionships that we have by selecting the right friends and being the right friend. The Bible has much to say about true friendship. Jesus gives a great definition for true friendship in ]ohn 15:13-15 - "13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you?' Jesus is the purist definition of a true friend, someone who is willing to lay down their life for your good. There is another great example of true friendship in 1 Samuel 18-20 between David and Jonathan. Even though Jonathan's father, Saul, was seeking to kilt David, Jonathan risked his own life to remain David's friend and protect him. 1 Samuel 18:1-4 says, "Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2 Saul took him that day, and would not let him go home to his father's house anymore. 3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. 4 And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt?' Understanding the importance of friendship, we should look to the Scriptures for instruction on how to be a true friend. Proverbs 17:17 says, "Nfriend BRIAN MOORE loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity." One of the most important characteristics of true friendship is stead- fastness. A true friend will stick by you no matter how bad the storm gets. In fact, adversity will help you identify the authenticity of friendship. Proverbs 27:6 says, "Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are decei(ful." A friend that genuinely loves you will wound you if it is necessary to rescue you. They will tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear. A faithful wound from a friend is far more valuable than a hypocritical compliment. Flattery is not true friendship. A true friend cares enough to confront. Proverbs 27:17 says, "As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend?' True friends encourage you to do right when you are around them. Their companionship will make you a better person. They will bring out the best in you and encourage you to improve in areas of weakness. As Christians, we should strive to be Christ like and glorify God in all that we say and do. We must realize that doing this successfully is a team effort. We need genuine relationships with other Christians. This is what makes church involvement so important. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, "24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching." Seek out true friendships and strive to be that kind of friend for others. Rev. Brian Moore is the senior pas- tor of New Providence Baptist Church, 2560 Highway 41, Smarr.
