August 22, 2018 Reporter Jeff Dean, pastor of The Sanctuary church has all new leadership from when the molestation occurred. Continued from Front that Hutcheson had them shower with him and engage in mutual sex acts, and one testified that the molestation happened "too many times to count". Hutcheson worked with youth in the church and played in the worship band for several years. In 2016, one of his victims, then about 20 years old, told church leaders that Hutcheson had molested him between 2009-11, when he was in middle school. He said he came forward because he had become worried that Hutcheson was preying on another then- middle school age "He reported it became he had seen the defendant with the second victim, and was worried that it was happening to him" said Malcor. Both victims were Church in Juliette, said the what it had in 2009-2015, from Monroe County, said Malcor. Malcor said Hutcheson admitted the molestation to then-church pastor Mike Quicke in 2016, but that some church leaders grew impatient when nothing was reported to authorities. So church member John Branan asked his childhood friend, David LaValley, the head of the FBI in Atlanta, for help and in August 2016 the FBI began to investigate, said Malcor. That's when the Monroe County sheriff's office got involved, but then investiga- tors realized the incidents happened at Hutcheson's Bibb County home and the case was moved to the Bibb County sheriffs office. Authorities ex- ecuted a search warrant on Hutcheson's home in November 2016 and found child pornography involving middle school-age boys on his computer. Malcor said Hutcheson could still face federal charges for that. Hutcheson was arrested in January 2017 for molesting the first victim, and after authorities interviewed the second victim, Hutcheson was charged with molest- ing him in May 2017, said Malcor. Malcor said before the trial, prosecutors offered Hutcheson a plea deal of a 40-year sentence with 20 years to serve in prison. "We wanted to spare these kids from having to testify" said Malcor. 'Adults don't want talk about such matters in court either" But instead Hutcheson chose a trial, yet he never took the stand in his de- fense. He wound up getting five more years in prison -than were offered. Malcor said the victims, one ofwhom is now in his early 20s and the other who is still a teenager, did very well testifying about some- thing so painful. "They were very coura- geous" said Malcor. "Seeing these young men on the stand was very difficult for me, and was difficult for the jury as well. They didn't want to testify, but they both did very well" Malcor said the boys didn't have a lot of parental involvement growing up, or a father in the home, so church members thought Hutcheson was just taking in boys who needed a good male role model. "He held himself out as a responsible, dedicated guy MOPS of Macon/Forsyth Fall&Winter, ;Children's Consignment Fundraiser Friday August 24th 9AM - 9PM *Shop at 8:30 AM with a $3 donation to Jay's Hope* Saturday August 25th It~ *Half price ONLY on items marked REDUCED helping disadvantaged kids;' said Malcor. After the first victim came forward in 2016, Hutcheson admitted the molestation to both Quicke and Branan, who both testified to that fact in the trial. Hutcheson was found guilty of four counts of child molestation and two counts of enticing a child for inde- cent purposes. Malcor said the church family has supported the victims and both seem to be doing well despite the trauma. Changing Malcor said she prosecut- ed a similar molestation case involving a youth worker, who was a GBI agent, at Northway Church in Macon last year, and that Northway has participated in training on how to look for warning signs to ensure such things don't happen again. Meanwhile, The Sanctuary, a relatively new church that split off from Russellville Baptist, hired a new pastor, Jeff Dean, last fall who said he never knew Hutcheson, and that the church is eager to move forward. "These past events do not reflect upon our churcl{* it is today ' said Dean. are far removed from that leadership and are focused on God's desire for us as we move forward. Please pray for all involved." Sadly, LaValle the FBI leader in Atlanta who got the prosecution started, died in May from cancer contracted while investigat- hag the 9-11 attacks in New York. Some noted this was LaValley's last prosecution, his fina contribution to justice in this world. service I IC I I eslgn i i i ing II l rvices The Monroe County Board of Commissioners does hereby announce that the millage rate will be set at a meeting to be held at the Monroe County Board of Commissioners, 38 West Main Street, Forsyth, Georgia 31029 on September 6, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. and pursuant to the requirements of O.C.G.A.
