Coach: Heath Webb 0 2017: 3-2 0 Region: 2-2 The Bulldogs will open its season at home with a much-anticipated clash against Gainesville, one of the superpower programs in the history of GHSA football. However, the Red Elephants likely won’t present the same type of test of great Gainesville teams in the past. New Red El- ephants’ head coach Heath Webb is expected to get Gainesville back among the state’s elite, but that likely won’t come soon enough to have any chance of upsetting MP at home. Jagkzon ,Aug. 24 0 7:30 p.m. Deals Red Devil Hill Jackson, . Region 4-AAA 0 Colors: Red & blue Ga. Coach:DaryMyricks¢Z)17:5-6°Region:3-3 For the third straight year, MP will meet non—region rival Jackson in Week of the season. After back-to-back classics in the famed series in 2015 and 2016, MP wal- loped Jackson 28—7 in its home opener last year. Things could be much tougher on Red Devil Hill this time around as a veteran Jackson squad will be hungry for sixth- year head coach Dary Myricks’ first victory in the Backyard Brawl. Morrow Mustangs Morrow, Ga. Aug. 31 o 7:30 p.m. . Dan Pitts Stadium at Mitchell Field What was supposed to be MP’s lone breather in the midst of a challenging non-region slate could end up being a down-to-the—wire contest. Morrow, which has been among the state’s most lowly programs over the past two decades, is expected to field its best team since the late ‘905 in 2018. The Mustangs, who captured the 1987 state crown, will feature standout safety Jamal Hill, who has received college offers from Arkansas and Michigan. “We” Sept. 7 0 7:30 p.m. “151322.. Dan PittsStadiumatMitchell Field Region 5-AAA 0 Colors: Blue & white In what could be the most highly—anticipated regular season contest of MP’s year, the private school powerhouse Lovett Lions will step out of Atlanta and travel to Forsyth for a showdown with MP. The AAA Lions have just as storied a history as MP and have had only three losing seasons since 1981. Lovett’s longtime coach Mike Muschamp, the of South Carolina head—man Will, led the Lions to the 2013 AA title in a 14-7 victory over Lamar County. Peach County Trojans 1 Fort Valley, ‘ i ““ .. Dan PittsStadiumatMitchell Field .. -— Region 2-AAAA 0 Colors: Navy & silver "a" 1" Coach: Nick Davis-2017:5-6- Region: 3-2 MP set the tone for its 2017 region dominance with a 42—1 8 road thumping of Spalding a year ago. The Bulldogs will be looking to extend its 7—1 series edge against the Jaguars, but a victory won’t come easily against a talented Spalding team. The Jaguars took MP to the final second at Dan Pitts Stadium in 2016 and could do the same again this year in large part due to the talents of one of the state’s top receivers, senior Zion Puckett. Oct. 5 0 7:30 p.m. Matthews Field Region2- oColors:Puple, black&silver Coach: Juslin Elder 0 2017: 4-6 0 Region: 14 Despite a disappointing 2017, Upson—Lee gave MP its stiffest competition of the Region 2—AAAA season when the Knights pushed the Bulldogs down to the final play at Dan Pitts Sta- dium a year ago. The Bulldogs have been dominant in Thomaston in their last two trips there, outscoring Upson-Lee 66-0 on the Knights’ home field. Things are expected to be tougher in 2018 with Upson—Lee featuring perhaps the state’s top defensive end, senior Travon Walker. LWeSt Oct. 19 0 7:30 p.m. Horseshoe Stadium Dexter, Ga. Region 2-AAAA 0 Colors: Blue & white CoadtKagatMoClaI'102017:6-6-Reg'm:3-2 The Raiders were MP’s top region rival for several years as the two programs engaged in a trio of region championship Showdowns in 2014—16. However, the Bulldogs have sur— passed West Laurens in recent seasons and that trend is expected to continue into 2018. But Horseshoe Stadium has always been a tough place for visitors to play in front of a passionate Raiders’ crowd, and the West Laurens contest could be a trap game for MP. Perry Panthers Oct. 26 0 7:30 p.m. Dan Pitts Stadium at Mitchell Field Region 2-AAAA 0 Colors: Maroon gold Coach: Kevin Smith 0 2017: 5—5 0 Region: 14 A struggling Perry program rebounded nicely under new coach Kevin Smith in 2017, narrowly missing out on a state playoff berth. The Panthers, led by 315-pound de- fensive tackle Antwann Fann, will look to continue that momentum into 2018 but will need to pull out all the stops to be competitive against MP. Despite'arriving just min- utes before kickoff due to traffic, the visiting Bulldogs dismantled Perry 47—21 in 2017.
