Bittick, who had served as Monroe County sheriff since 1983, resigned in June to become U.S. Marshal for the Middle District of Georgia. A drop-in party was held in his honor on Saturday with law enforce- ment officers from throughout Middle Georgia in attendance. Photos and badges from Bittick's law enforcement career were on display at the front of the courtroom while Bittick's replacement, interim sheriff A1 Shack- elford, served as the event's emcee. After thanking Bittick for his service in a short speech, Shackleford presented the former sheriff with a commemorative gift box decorated with a photo of the courthouse on the interior as well as a shotgun for bird hunting. "He's helped so many people in this county" Shack- elford said of Bittick. "I could be here all day long and probably all week telling stories of how he's helped people in this county." Shackelford, who previously served as chief of Nor- folk Southern Police, said Bittick personally helped him in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy when the former sheriffused his myriad Washington, D.C. connections to get Shackelford a meeting with the U.S. Secretary of Above: Longtime Monroe County Sheriff John Cary Bittick (third from right) addresses his friends and family at his farewell Homeland Security. party at the Monroe County Courthouse on Saturday. Monroe County has been part of our family for a long time, and we love all of you." Despite his new position, Bittick will continue to live in north Monroe County and is expected to remain a fixture in the community.
