Georgia economic development heads
convene at Georgia Forestry Foundation
The Georgia Department of Economic Development held its quarterly
Board of Directors meeting at Forsyth's Georgia Forestry Foundation on
May 23. Many of the state's top economic development leaders, including
Georgia Department of Economic Development commissioner Pat Wilson,
were on hand as the board learned about state legislative initiatives that
could boost the state's economy as well as received information on for-
estry's critical importance to the state infrastructure. A Georgia Tech economic impact study indicated that
forestry employed the second-most workers, 51,900, of any industry sector in the state in 2016 and gener-
ated over $20.8 billion in total revenue in that same year. The meeting, which lasted two-and-a-half hours,
was preceded by a tour of Barnesville-based Jordan Forest Products. Local representatives in attendance
at the meeting included: Forsyth mayor Eric Wilson, Monroe County commission chairman Greg Tapley and
Development Authority of Monroe County president Bo Gregory. At top: Bleckley County-based, father-

Curtis Reynolds of Forsyth-
based Harbin Engineering recom-
mended on Tuesday, July 10 that
Monroe County commissioners
approve a vertical expansion to
the county's landfill to increase its
capacity.
Reynolds said additional space
Reynolds also told commission-
ers the county will need to renew
its landfill permit by creating an
updated plan by June 1, 2019, per
new state requirement. Reynolds
said the county's current landfill
plan was developed 26 years ago.
Reynolds pro)ected the county
landfill's lifespan at 60 years,
which would enable it to be used
until 2077. He said the proposed

Harbin said he met with District

indoor swimming pool as part of
the rec expansion. Evans urged
Harbin to visit Harris County,
which he said has a public pool.
