While Patel suffered no injuries his 2008 Honda Accord wasn't so lucky. Patel told Forsyth police he did not hear the train's horn or see a train coming in his direction when crossing E. Johnston and Railroad Ave therefore he didn't stop. However, the driver be- hind Patel, Pamela Degarmo, told police that the driver ignored the train's horn and continued driving. Degarmo said that the engineer of the train tried to hit the brakes but could not have stopped in time to prevent the ac- cident from happening. Chester Harwell, engineer of the train involved, stated that he blew the train's horn as he approached the intersection, but there was no way to stop before colliding with Patel. (Photo/Abby Cox)
