A 28-year-old Hispanic
]onesboro man was arrested and
charged with fleeing or attempt-
ing to elude after a high-speed
chase on 1-75 South on May 18.
,At about 3:22 p.m Cpl. Jacob
Robins and Dep. Akedra Robert-
son saw a black 2002 Dodge Ram
traveling 93 mph in a 70 mph
zone on 1-75 South near mile
marker 191. Deputies tried to
stop the truck, but it instead sped
up to 105 mph while swerving
from lane to lane as a Georgia
State Patrol trooper joined the
:chase. Near mile marker 183,
the truck nearly hit a white van,
which caused the van to cut Rob-
ins' patrol car off momentarily.
About a mile later, the truck
passed several vehicles in the
emergency lane before slamming
on the brakes and making a right
turn through a ditch and fence
and into a field. Robins then saw
the male driver, who was wearing
a white-t-shirt and pink shorts,
exit the truck and take off on foot
into the woods. Meanwhile, the
truck kept going until it struck
a tree, causing the front pas-
senger side wheel to break off.
Robertson and Cpls. Timothy
Campfield, Thomas Haskins and
Christian Sawley all searched
for the driver, including using a
drone, for three hours but were
unable to find him. Dispatchers
then contacted the truck's male
owner, who identified the driver.
Dispatchers determined the
driver was wanted for cruelty to
children and a probation viola-
tion. The driver will also be
charged with speeding, failure to
maintain lane, reckless driving,
driving in the emergency lane
and driving while unlicensed.
Deputy saves driver
after vehicle catches
fire during 1-75 wreck
A 51 -year-old black Mc-
Donough woman was arrested
and charged with DUI after
a two-vehicle wreck on 1-75
South on May 19. At about 3:12
a.m Dep. Willie Barkley went
to 1-75 South near mile marker
189 where he saw one vehicle
stopped in the middle lane of
1-75 South and a second vehicle,
a blue 2011 Hyundai Sonata, in
the median facing the wrong
direction. Smoke was coming
from the Sonata, and Barkley
saw flames coming from under
the vehicle near the driver's side
door. Barkley then opened the
driver side door and pulled the
female driver, who was looking
inside a passenger side compart-
ment, from the burning vehicle.
The Sonata driver, who smelled
of alcohol, told Barkley she
knew her vehicle was on fire but
was looking for her cell phone.
The Sonata driver said she was
fine but didn't know what had
happened. The male driver of
the other vehicle involved in the
wreck told Barkley he was travel-
ing in the far left lane ofi-75
South when he saw the Sonata
stopped in his lane with its lights
off at the bottom of a hill. The
male driver said he tried to steer
around the Sonata but clipped
it in the rear. The Sonata driver
then told Barkley she was headed
home from a Stockbridge bar.
The Sonata driver said she con-
sumed beer and an Apple Ciroc
vodka drink before leaving the
bar about 2:30 a.m. The Sonata
driver had slurred speech, red,
watery eyes and was unsteady on
her feet. During the conversa-
tion, the Sonata driver said she
needed to call her son. She then
placed her phone from her hand
back into her purse. She then
searched her purse for her phone
and when she didn't find it, she
told Barkley it was in her vehicle,
which occurred several times
during the incident. The Sonata
driver then got out her credit
cards and tried to pay an online
bill on her phone. Barkley told
her he did not have enough time
for her to do that at the wreck
scene. He then asked her to take
several field sobriety tests, but
she refused, saying she needed
to call her lawyer. Barkley saw
the Sonata driver had urinated
on herself. After first denying
it, the Sonata driver admitted it,
saying she was nervous during
the wreck. The Sonata driver
then refused a field breath test or
a blood test and was taken to the
Monroe County Jail. The Sonata
driver was also charged with
improper stopping on roadway
and having no insurance.
Wise. man charged
with DUI on 1-475
A 52-year-old white Suamico,
Wisc. man was arrested and
charged with DUI after a traf-
fic stop on 1-475 South on May
20. At about 10:55 p.m Sgt.
John Thompson saw a white
2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500
failing to maintain its lane on
1-475 South near mile marker
13. Thompson smelled a strong
odor of alcohol inside the truck.
The male driver, who said he was
headed to Byron, held on to a
concrete barrier as he walked to
the back to the truck. The driver
then admitted to drinking four
beers at the airport, where he had
flown in from Wisconsin. The
driver then failed several field
sobriety tests, and Thompson
found a large cup of beer inside
the truck. Thompson then took
the driver to the Monroe County
Jail, where he tested positive
for more than the legal limit of
alcohol on a state breath test.
The driver was also charged with
failure to maintain lane and an
open container violation.
Prius driver says grov-
el cracked windshield
At about 7:10 p.m. on May 20,
a Huntsville, Ala. woman told
Dep. Peyton Henderson that she
was driving on 1-75 South near
mile marker 177 when gravel
being hauled in a semi-truck fell
onto her red 2015 Toyota Prius,
causing multiple cracks to the
windshield. The woman said she
was able to get the semi-truck's
tag information.
