It was a pretty spring day, and I decided to leave the office a little early. As I was driving south on Highway 41, I rounded a curve and immediately my heart sank. Lying in the road was our own Jerry Stephens (a.k.a.: The Bolingbroke Mayor). I turned my flashers on and pulled over to go to him. By then a few others were on the scene, includ- ing the man Jerry ran into. Jerry was moving some and had a pulse, but I was fearing the worst. Waiting on the EMT's to arrive, we tried to keep him still but talking as he came to. He appeared to be in shock. His bike was on the side of the road, and the back was crumpled up. It was not a good day for Jerry, whom I was certain was on his way home to watch his favorite TV program- The Andy Griffith Show. This would be one day he would miss seeing it as the ambulance arrived and proceeded to stabi- lize and load him up. I begin to feel a little better about him as he began fussing at the EMT's. For those of you that do not know, Jerry is just a "fussy" person; most know and accept him for this characteristic. His sister, DonNe, arrived on the scene, and I left saying a prayer for Jerry. Bolingbroke just would not be the same without him riding around town daily on his bike. I spoke to Donnie on March 2 for an update, and she told me Jerry had three broken ribs, a broken collarbone, possible concussion and scrapes and bruises and was in Navicent hospital for several days. He has since been transferred to the Rehabilitation Center on Northside Drive in Macon. Donnie said Jerry will be there for about two weeks. Please keep Jerry in your prayers for contin- ued healing. So many of you have inquired about him and I have told Donnie to tell Jerry. If you would like to send him a card, the.address is 3351 Northside Drive Macon, GA 31210. cki Smith covers Bolingbroke for the Reporter.
