Diesel fuel spilled into Rum Creek on Wednesday, Jan. 31 after a Mansfield tanker truck
driver reported falling asleep at the wheel and crashing into the woods off Hwy. 87. Johnny
Cronan, 65, of Mansfield, was driving north on Hwy. 87 near Christian Road around 1:34 p.m.
carrying diesel in his tank when he reportedly fell asleep, crossed into the oncoming lane
and then veered offthe shoulder, careening down a bank before the tanker landed on its
side; according to a report by Monroe County deputy Cody Maples. Diesel fuel began spilling
out of the truck down the hill and into Rum (:reek. Monroe County EMS set up barriers to try
to prevent further pollution and the scene was later tumed over tothe state Environmental
Protection Division. It wasn't clear how much fuel had leaked into Rum Creek. No citations
